The chill of winter bites harder when it’s paired with uncertainty. On December 23, 2024, members of USW Local 8328 were locked out by employer Welded Tube, shattering years of labour peace and leaving 340 dedicated workers in the cold.
For many, this cuts especially deep during what should be a season of togetherness. “It’s sad and unfortunate, especially during the holidays,” shares Steven Carvalho, Vice President of Local 8328 and a third-generation Welded Tube worker. “I wanted to celebrate the holidays with my kids, but I’m managing this lockout instead. It feels planned – right before Christmas. It’s heartbreaking.” Galvanized Steel Pipe
After numerous days of bargaining and not arriving at a deal, the employer unilaterally elected to lock out members. The union made it clear that it was always ready to return to the bargaining table to resolve the outstanding issues. USW Local 8328 President John Manfre expressed his disappointment, stating “The lockout has been devasting, creating tension and unwanted animosity against the employer. A strong relationship and regular communication have always been key to our over 50 years of successful partnership. Once this labour dispute has ended, our focus must now transition to maintaining health and safety programs to ensure customer loyalty and reaffirm our position in the marketplace.”
The timing is especially cruel for Jerry Silva, who has nearly 27 years of experience at the company. “I wanted to spend time with my family, but I can’t. It’s been miserable. Our relationship with the employer will never be the same after this.”
Despite the chill of the picket line, the warmth of solidarity shines through. At 111 Rayette Road, 541 Bowes Road, and 50 Bowes Road in Concord, Ont. workers stand united, supporting each other as they face this Grinch-like behaviour from their employer.
