SOME 1,000 light-emitting diode (LED) and solar-powered street lights will be installed this year by the Pasir Gudang City Council (MBPG) as part of its low-carbon initiative. Solar Power Light
Pasir Gudang mayor Datuk Asman Shah Abd Rahman said the LED poles would be installed along main roads and the solar powered ones would be fixed at residential areas.
The city council will also introduce a policy for new housing developments to instal LED lights, he added.
“For traditional lamp posts, if one is damaged the whole line will not work, but with the LED, only the single malfunctioning light will be affected.
“This is the first phase of our plan to replace the lights in the city with energy-efficient lamps,” he said.
He disclosed that MBPG had appointed a contractor to oversee the project for the next five years.
Asman Shah said every new housing area would also have a smart pole, smart bin and electric vehicle charger linked to 5G connectivity.
“We might be the first local government in the country to implement this policy,” he said.
The city council has allocated about RM15mil for the LED lights and RM11mil for the solar ones for the next five years, he added.
“We will also place smart traffic lights at 77 junctions in the city to ensure smoother traffic flow.
“They will be monitored and controlled from our new command centre, which should be completed within the next six months,” said Asman Shah.
The command centre, he said, would be linked to the police station for immediate action.
“We are also working on a mobile app for our parking system that will sync with those from other city councils,” he said.
He added that the app would be unveiled in July.
