In times of pandemic, a rapid response in terms of increasing knowledge from scientific research is essential to be able to implement effective actions to combat the spread of the virus.On the subject, the University of Tuscia conducted a study in the Mass Spectrometry Laboratory by the research group of Anna Maria Timperio, professor of the Department of Ecological and Biological Sciences - DEB, in collaboration with the professors of the Department for innovation in biological, agri-food and forestry systems – DIBAF, coordinated by Giuseppe Scapigliati.The research produced two scientific articles which were published in international journals.In particular, the authors observed for the first time the existence of small molecules called "antiviral metabolites" (Sarcosine and S-adenosylhomocysteine) involved in the physiological recovery after infection with the SARS-CoV-2 virus.These metabolites can be considered biomarkers which, once identified on lymphocytes, indicate the activation of an effective and long-term immune response.The results also suggest that, after infection, leukocyte metabolism is reprogrammed through the production of amino acids related to protection against SARS-CoV-2.These studies represent a substantial step forward in understanding the effects of the virus on the immune system and, in the future, could contribute to the development of new drugs and vaccines.The study was conducted using a high-resolution mass spectrometer "Q-Exactive ORBITRAP", sophisticated and cutting-edge instrumentation among the most used in the analysis of metabolites, owned by the Department of Ecological and Biological Sciences - DEB.
