Laurie Shaver is accused of killing her husband and burying his body in her backyard.

Laurie Shaver’s lawyer says she did not kill her husband, but instead, two other people were involved, including a child, who he says is willing to testify in her defense.

In March 2018, Lake County investigators were searching a property near Clermont that, at one point, Michael Shaver shared with his wife.

Remains were found, and more than two years later, Laurie Shaver was arrested for murder. The defense now says there's a confession to what happened to Michael Shaver and not from the woman accused in his killing. In a request for a psychological exam by an expert, the defense says there's a "minor child who confessed to having committed the respective murder in this matter” and that the “child has persisted in seeking to testify.” Attorney Jeffrey Wiggs is representing Laurie Shaver.

"The minor can relay how this crime was committed, when it was committed, and precisely how it was committed,” Wiggs said. In an email from the Lake County prosecutor who is opposing the evaluation, he says there is "no credible evidence supporting the claims made concerning the involvement of the child” and that the "child has not made statements to any law enforcement agency.” "We know how the crime was committed, who committed the crime; we know the involvement of the minor child and another party,” Wiggs said. “We've tried to bring that to the state who have just crossed their hands and said, ‘there's the door.’" Wiggs was turned down for the exam by an expert but is asking the judge to reconsider. "To demonstrate to the court that the minor's not been manipulated with or tampered with in any capacity, that motion was denied,” Wiggs said. The prosecutor closed his email writing, "All previous statements made by the child would contradict these claims." Shaver’s trial is set right now for September.
